OnePlus 12R Overview:
The 12R is a step below the flagship OnePlus 12. The cameras are watered down, and you get last year’s flagship chipset instead of the latest one. Still, that’s enough for high-end gaming performance. Plus, you get a premium display, a large battery, and fast charging too. The OnePlus 12R uses the same design language as other recent OnePlus phones.
The most obvious stylistic flourish is the round camera bump, which blends into a wraparound piece of the aluminum frame. The back of the phone appears to be glass, and in this glossy colorway, the phone is easy to smudge.
The 12R has an alert slider on the side, a signature feature of OnePlus phones. It also features IP65-rated ingress protection, meaning it can handle being splashed or even jetted with water—though you’ll want to keep it away from full submersion.
Design & Display
The OnePlus 12R comes with a 6.78-inch curved LTPO OLED display, carrying a 120Hz refresh rate, Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and high resolution. That resolution works out to 450 PPI, not quite as sharp as the QHD on the flagship OnePlus 12, but still great. It also supports 10-bit color depth, HDR10+ video, and Dolby Vision.

The panel also supports HDR in photos within the gallery, just like it’s on the OnePlus 12. The screen brightness is fantastic as well, with over 800 nits as you drag the brightness slider to max. Of course, in adaptive mode, it can really go up as high as around 1,200 nits if it is rather sunny outside. Thanks to LTPO tech, the display is even more adaptive and can dial down from 120Hz all the way to 1Hz when idling to save energy.
The 12R is capable of high frame rate gaming too. For audio, the phone has a pair of stereo speakers with very good loudness and clean sound, though the low-end presence leaves a bit more to be desired. You can wake up and unlock the OnePlus 12R using an optical under-display fingerprint reader.
It works pretty reliably. You can get it with either 128GB or 256GB of onboard storage; the former is UFS 3.1, rather than the faster UFS 4.0.
Software
The software running on the OnePlus 12R is Android 14 with OxygenOS 14 on top. That’s the same you’d get on an Oppo or Realme phone since they all come from the same manufacturer. There are a couple of cosmetic changes on the OnePlus version, like some specific clock faces.
Since this phone has an IR blaster, you can use it as a remote control for other devices. As far as software support goes, the OnePlus 12R will get three major OS upgrades and four years of security patches. If you want to know more about the specific features of OxygenOS, we have a separate video coming, and I will link it here once it is released.
Performance
As I mentioned briefly before, the OnePlus 12R comes with last year’s flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Flagships these days, like the OnePlus 12, are coming out with the new Snapdragon HN3, so it does fall a generation behind in raw benchmark scores compared to phones with the latest top-end silicon.
You don’t get the advanced rate racing for games here. Still, it packs the same punch as a 2023 flagship, and there is more than enough power here for heavy gaming, multitasking, and a smooth overall experience. Plus, thermal management is pretty decent here. While we did see some thermal throttling during our prolonged stress tests, it wasn’t extreme.
Battery Capacity
The OnePlus 12R comes with a 5,500 mAh battery, and battery life is top-notch. The phone got an active use score of 14 hours and 32 minutes, a bit higher than what the OnePlus 12 managed to achieve.
The 12R ships with a SuperVOOC adapter that’s rated for 100W when plugged into a 220-volt outlet or 80W if you’re in 110-volt territory. It’s super fast; it can charge the battery from 0 to 70% in 15 minutes. A full charge took just 25 minutes. There’s no wireless charging on the OnePlus 12R, though, which you do find on many rivals.
Camera
On the cameras. The setup is what you’d find on a typical mid-range phone: a 50 MP main cam, an 8 MP ultra-wide, and a 2 MP macro camera. The 12R’s main camera takes great-looking daytime photos. Detail is excellent, and it has a nicely natural look to it. Contrast is high, dynamic range is very good, and we can’t complain about the color rendition either.

We shot a few of the scenes side by side with the OnePlus 12, and in most cases, the output from the 12R is so similar that we’d be hard-pressed to tell them apart. There is no telephoto camera on the 12R, but here’s a look at its two-times digital zoom. The photos are OK, just the detail gets smeared while sharpening is dialed way too high.
In low light, the OnePlus 12R will apply night mode processing to its photos automatically. Results are great, with nice exposures and a wide dynamic range, good development in both shadows and highlights; detail is fantastic, and noise is a non-issue.
Both colors and auto white balance look good. Comparisons against the OnePlus 12 left us a little confused – the 12R not only keeps up with the 12 but in some scenes, we’re actually seeing some better definition from the less expensive phone.
The main cam on the OnePlus 12R can shoot video in up to 4K at 60 FPS. Quality-wise, it’s okay, not really great. Strictly speaking, the videos are a little overexposed, and dynamic range isn’t the widest. Detail is still pretty good, and there’s no noise. Electronic video stabilization isn’t as great on the 12R as it is on the OnePlus 12. There’s still some leftover wobble while walking and occasional focus hunting.
Low-light video quality from the main cam is actually solid. The exposure is well-judged, the dynamic range is reasonably wide, and colors are accurate and well-saturated. Detail can be a little sketchy in the shadows, but it’s not too bad.
So, photos saved by the 8 MP ultra-wide cam have enough detail, low noise, and decent dynamic range. Colors are also well-matched to the main cams. At night, when auto night mode kicks in, the ultra-wide still captures a fair amount of detail, and dynamic range and colors look good. Moving on to video recording, the ultra-wide cam is only capable of 1080p and doesn’t look very good.
As you’d expect, it’s nothing special. Lastly, we have selfies from the 16 MP front-facing cam. They have okay dynamic range and colors, but the level of detail leaves more to be desired.

Conclusion
There you have it, the OnePlus 12R. You get quite a lot here: an excellent display, class-leading battery life, super-fast charging, a high-end chipset, and great photos from the main cam. You don’t get a telephoto camera here, and video recording and selfie quality aren’t anything to write home about. You also don’t get wireless charging, and rivals can offer better water resistance. But if those don’t bother you, the OnePlus 12R might be a great alternative to look at.
