The Vivo Y28 is a mid-entry level offering built to last, carrying one of the largest battery capacities in this segment. In the last few weeks, I’ve used the device for good measure, and despite some expected niggles after those weeks, this is what I really think about the Vivo Y28. Is it good enough to be your next daily driver? Let’s find out.

Desing and Build Quality

I would be telling a lie by saying that the design doesn’t look exciting. The Vivo’s phones-Y28 is not an exception-a catch to the eyes, no doubt. It goes among those smartphone designs one would never feel like using any case on, since if your preference lists a gorgeous-looking phone, definitely this is something one would bring out of the bouquet.

It felt great for one-hand usage and was comfortable to hold at 199g. Plus, the back panel didn’t get smudged too often despite the glossy surface. Talking of the build, there’s a plastic frame in between that has a metallic glossy finish, matching the color. You get an IP64 rating here for added dust resistance while the 4 denotes basic splash resistance.

The buttons and ports for this device are placed on its right-hand side. Those buttons include the volume rocker and the power button. The left side has a dual nano-SIM card tray; it is a hybrid SIM slot, so you can use one SIM card with a MicroSD card or two SIMs without an SD card.

Down below are placed one of two speakers, a USB Type-C port, and an appreciated 3.5mm audio port. First, I tried to guess where the other loudspeaker was.

Display

The Vivo Y28 isn’t the device carrying an AMOLED display. Now, I understand there’s no compromise on the design front, but the display side is not that appealing. We all know how AMOLED panels have become quite the norm in this segment, with every other brand.

But Vivo has decided to stick with an IPS LCD panel here, though with a 90Hz refresh rate. So, you definitely miss the 120Hz vibes on the Vivo Y28. Speaking of the actual display quality, it is just decent – not that sharp, to be precise – as it only has an HD+ resolution. You still can enjoy movies and reels as you’ll get used to with this resolution.

To contemplate that, you get a stereo speaker setup which kind of sounds sharp at full volume. A moderate level sounds just fine. Meanwhile, the sunlight readability is pretty good, with 1,000 nits of peak brightness, while the typical brightness stays at 750 nits.

Performance

Now, coming to the performance side of things, the Vivo Y28 can only cater well to those basic users. You get a Helio G85 processor here, which is surely not the best in this segment. Paired with 8GB of onboard RAM and 256GB of storage space, the phone sells in Nepal is NPR 23,999 for the 6/128GB and NPR 26,499 for the 8/256GB version.$180.

Now, that actually puts it in the same price bracket as the Redmi Note 13 and Samsung’s Galaxy A15 5G, leaving you to wonder which is actually the better deal in terms of overall performance and value for money. If you were to ask me, yeah, I’ll definitely go with either the Redmi Note 13 or Samsung Galaxy A15 5G over the Vivo Y28.

It tends to be a bit slow and lag at times, which I could observe in my usage of the Vivo Y28. I do know this is pretty common within this price range, but still, the Helio G85 just doesn’t fit right for the price. So, in my perspective, the Vivo Y28 is good for social media use, some multimedia consumption, casual gaming, and decent battery life. That’s basically all.

Camera

On the camera side, it uses a dual-camera layout: a 50MP primary camera and 2MP for depth. Still, I count out the secondary lens since this is practically dead. So, regarding the Vivo model, I expected good results from photo shooting, but it performed quite well, basing on an average level, more or less just fine.

Battery

One cool factor for me in the Vivo Y28 was the 6,000mAh battery capacity, which can easily be relied on for two days with moderate usage. On top of that, the 44W flash charge support can top it up from 0 to 100% in about 1 hour and 40 minutes. It doesn’t sound the fastest by any means, but it is a big battery, so it is what it is.

Conclusion

Out of the box, the Vivo Y28 boots with FunTouch OS 14 based on Android 14. It is nice and simple, with plenty of features that allow personalization and performance. You can also choose between several graphics and animations for things like the charging display, notifications, etc. – along with themes. If that’s something that would work for you, you can even add up to 8GB of extended virtual memory in the settings. It also has multi-tasking technology with a game mode for better performance and optimized gameplay.

Undoubtedly, the Vivo Y28 checks all the boxes in terms of looks and design. For someone who is all about going for a good-looking smartphone, this phone will do well. However, at this selling price, Vivo’s choice to continue with the Helio G85 processor for the Y28 is unjustified.

Plus, you only get a 90Hz LCD panel here, which is not that great when looking at the competition, like the Redmi Note 13 or Samsung Galaxy A15 5G, for instance, which were mentioned above in this review. That said, it is not too bad or anything; it should be good for basic users. Still, this phone is surely not the best package you could get at a price-to-performance ratio.
